Successful elite car theft rings steal thousands of vehicles every month. They do it in a matter of moments. They are sophisticated. They know the latest technology involving vehicle security systems. They are disciplined. Vehicles that are popular with the public are just as popular with the thieves. Many vehicle manufacturers have equipped their prodcuts with an array of sophisticated security features including motion detectors- that sound a vehicle alarm when the car is moved, recessed door locks- to foil prying tools, an electronic engine immobilizer to prevent the car from being started without the proper key and if thieves do manage to steal the vehicle a global position device that is concealed in one of 25 different locations, allows police to track it. Professional car thieves blew right by these devices and are so efficient cars are gone in a matter of seconds. They do so quickly and they do so quietly and undetected and they get away with it. They know what devices they have to defeat and they have efficient action plans. They steal cars out of our driveways, commuter lots, parking lots, malls, etc. These cars are stolen for parts. Many wind up in shipyards for exportation to areas abroad by mastermind car theft rings. From left to right: Now using stolen generic dealer keys the professional thief starts the car and drives off. They do so quickly, they do so quietly, and they get away with it! The facts are simple, audible car alarms and are not enough--no matter how sophisticated- they will and do not stop professional thieves. All most all mechanical and electronic devices are quickly and easily defeated. Even air brake locks-for big diesel rigs are easily circumvented by professionals. Moreover, most mechanical locking devices are very cumbersome to use and result in the vehicle operator neglecting to properly position and engage the devices. Imagine a woman in a mini skirt or dress trying to install or remove a wheel-locking device, especially in the snow or rain! It will not happen! Hidden kill switch in theory are a great idea but in real life on the street they are child's play for professional thieves as they quickly find them. All of the connections are made in the passenger compartment right under the dashboard. Even worse, if the switch is placed in such a location that it is inconvenient for they operator... they won't use it... so what's the point. Furthermore, pulling fuses, relays or removing your ECU will not stop professional thieves as they have and carry these items. These techniques and practices may slow down or stop an amaturer but they are no match for professional thieves. Look inside one organized crime ring. They made millions of dollars reselling and exporting stolen vehicles from southern Ontario. The kingpin in the criminal scheme is now behind bars. Mal Winder or Bill Dhaliwal is serving a ten year sentence at Joyceville Prison near Kingston. At the time of his arrest three years ago, police accused him of running one of the largest auto theft rings Canada had ever seen. Dave Seglins has the story.
Tracking devices and vehicle recovery systems may work, AFTER your car has already been stolen. These expensive systems only come into play after the car has been stolen, provide no impediment; they are After the Fact Jacks and are easily defeated and by the time the car is found there is a good chance it has already been stripped of parts. The time it takes from when the vehicle is driven off, to when the owner notices the vehicle is gone (even with an early warning system), to when the vehicle is actually tracked and recovered gives most thieves plenty of time to strip and dump the car.
Most radio and cellular based systems are easily defeated by simply driving the car to an underground parking lot or out of range. GPS systems are even easier to defeat. All you have to do is clip or break off the GPS antenna and the system is rendered useless. Even worse, according to the Police Department of Los Angeles, California, professional thieves have even found a method to locate and disable tracking and recovery devices while the vehicle is in motion.
Success for tracking device and vehicle recovery companies, may not be success for you. Theft recoveries are tracked and documented by law enforcement agencies, insurance companies and more importantly vehicle history services such as CarFax, so even if your vehicle is recovered, the resale value will drop significantly.
Add the cost of the tracking system, monthly fees, damage to the vehicle, drop in resale value, and tracking devices loose their appeal. A tracking device should be the last line of defense, not the first. You don't want someone to have possession of your car for one minute, let alone several hours, days or weeks. And most insurance companies will wait up to one month before paying out on your claim, just in case your vehicle turns up.
If fact, even if your vehicle is stolen and legitimately recovered it's resale value will be significantly reduced no matter how good it's condition or how low the mileage. Moreover, if during the theft, the vehicle is involved in a major accident or wreck- damage severely affects the safety and resale value of a vehicle. Even worse, if the vehicle sustained damage due to being stripped or fire damage and was rebuilt or reconstructed, then placed back on the road- the vehicle will receive a 'Salvage Title'.
Keep your vehicle from being stolen in the first place.
